I'm glad you're here

In March 2009 I accepted my own personal challenge to be Vegan for 6 weeks. I would say that I was 95% successful which I consider to be a major triumph. It wasn't as hard as I made it up to be in my head, and it felt good inside to be aligned with my intense desire to be someone who reveres all living things.

At the end of those 6 weeks I reassessed how I wanted to be going forward. And although I aspire to be vegan 100% ... what I'm choosing for now is to be vegan(ish). So what does that mean? Well, to me it means (and by that I mean today), that I no longer eat meat, and if I choose to have cheese, eggs or fish ... it has to be for a really, really good reason. And the really good reasons must be the exception and not the rule.

So why a blog you may ask? Well I'm guessing that there are lots of people like me who have thought about it or may be trying it and would like a little extra support. Here we can share what's hard, or in the way of making the vegan leap with humor and compassion, and without judgment or guilt.

I happen to be a Professional Certified Coach and have been since 1998. So let's coach! Yes, let's coach here online. I'll help you to identify the values you want to honor, see what inner saboteurs are lurking in the shadows, support you in creativing a compelling vision, identify clear action and even provide accountability if you want it. If you're reading this I know that you want something to be different with your food choices. Maybe you're motivated by health issues, maybe it's animal rights, or about protecting the environment. Whatever it is let's help each other create the food-life we most want to be having ... now.

Let's Get Started ...

Despite my best intentions I frequently mess up with my vegan attempts ... hence I consider myself to be vegan(ish). A couple of weeks ago I was driving home after a nice beach day with a friend and I was starving. I got very excited at the thought of having a tasty black bean burger at a little local restaurant. Arriving famished and anticipating this burger I learned that they were fresh out. Aaagggh ... you know how it is when you've got a certain something on the brain ... nothing else will do. I left promptly as nothing else was remotely vegan on the menu. So you know what I did? I went to the McDonald's drive-thru and ordered fries. Can you believe that? Now technically I suppose their fries are vegan, but hey ... becoming a junk food vegan is not exactly my highest mission here!

  1. A friend mentioned the amount of water required to sustain a cow until slaughter. When I think of the broader implications... it makes me realize my diet contributes to the total health of our planet. Could you offer more examples of this so that I may become better educated?

    Love your blog!

  2. That's right about the cows ... in fact I'm pretty sure I read about that in Diet for A New America. The amount of water it takes to raise a cow (not only for their consumption but to grow the grass, and everything else) to eventually end up with a SINGLE QUARTER POUNDER burger, is enough water to shower with for 2 1/2 months! So even if animal rights isn't your issue, and even if your health isn't the issue, environmentally there is still a huge impact.

I don't know of other examples off hand. I hope we hear from some other readers with examples. Thank you Linda.
